The Mountain Plaza

The Mountain Plaza (or yama no hiroba in Japanese) is the title of a self-sponsored ceramic amphitheater project located in the mountains of Mihama, Chita Penninsula located in the main island of Honshu, Japan. Designed specifically for Mount Sato, this site-specific installation consists of a stage area approximately 4.4 m x 5 m (14.5 ft x 16.5 ft). The focus of this project is the acoustic shell, or back wall for the amphitheater, approximately 13 m x 3 m x 2 m (43 ft x 10 ft x 6.5 ft). The acoustic shell is made from 15 kg. (33 lb.) blocks of raw clay pounded into one massive form resembling a giant shell or wave. Clay blocks were pounded from August 15th, 2002 to May 9th, 2004. Totaling 60 plus tons of clay in 633 days.
As we continue our work, several revelations have become obvious: we are constructing the Mountain Plaza as artists, parents, and people of this community. As artists, this work has challenged our spirit. The bigger the artistic challenge, the greater the faith which is required to meet that calling. As parents, we watch as the how the clay embodies the seasons, the passing phases of our children’s maturation, and family finger prints. As humans and guests in a foreign land, we believe we are contributing to a community by building a space for all members to experience, a space rooted in human labor and housed in the forest.
山の広場

「山の広場」は自主制作による野外劇場制作プロジェクトです。愛知県知多半島の美浜町にある里山の懐に囲まれた自然豊かな環境で、劇場の舞台背景にあたる音響板の部分（高さ３m、長さ１３m）を粘土で制作して焼成するという計画です。巨大な波や貝を想起させる形をした音響板は、重さ約１５kgの粘土のブロックを少 しづつ積み上げ、それを叩きながら１つの塊に仕上げて行きました。２００４年８月１５日からこの作業を始め２００４年５月９日まで、６３３日かけて総重量6０tを超える大量の粘土を使用して完成させました。
この作品の制作を続けていく内に幾つか気が付いた事があります。私たちは「山の広場」をアーティストとして、親として、地域に住んでいる者として制作をしています。アーティストとして、それは自分自身への挑戦であり、その挑戦が大きければ大きい程、自分を信じる事が出来なければ制作は出来ません。親として、こ こで制作をしながら子供の成長を見守っています。山の広場にはその成長の証に家族の手形を残しています。そして人間として、私たちはこの場所に故郷の様な親近感と懐かしさを感じています。私たちは「山の広場」を通じて、地域の人々にとっての、憩いの場、集いの場、体験の場として、この場所が育ってゆく事を願って制作 しています。
