Ximena Elgueda:

"My geographic upbringing, from the Andes of Santiago, Chile to the Caribbean jungles of the Orinoco (Venezuela), have filled me full of images of nature`s raw power. I am an intuitive sculptor. I have no preconceived notions other than the organic forms that seem to sprout from my fingers when I create. All I know is what feels right. Whether I am sculpting a monument, etching a print, compiling a video installation, or simply watching the world around me, I am meditating on and exploring the expression of nature`s raw pulse. I am inspired by the geographical and cultural differences of the countries I have lived in and the emotions that I feel for the relatives that I have left."

Born in Santiago, Chile in 1964, Ximena Elgueda grew up in Venezuela and came to Japan in 1994 with a scholarship to do her M.F.A. at Nagoya University of Art and Design. She writes that the university was a time of creative exploration, developing mural projects and large scale ceramics that outgrew the school`s firing capacity. Due to a public commission from the local mayor to make a ceramic statue "Autana" (175 cm x 60 cm), she relocated her studio to Tokoname where large kilns were still being fired. Here she continues to work and live with her husband and family.

「私の地理的な躾は、チリ、サンティアゴのアンデスからオリノコ（ベネズエラ）のカリブのジャングルまで、自然そのものの力のイメージで私を満たしてくれました。私は直感的な彫刻家です。私が創作するとき、指から芽を出すような根本的なこと以外の先入観はありません。私が知っている全ては、正しいと感じることです。記念碑を彫刻して、版画をエッチングで描いて、ビデオの編集をしているか、あるいはただ私の周りの世界を見ているかにかかわらず、私は自然の鼓動の表現について深く考え、そして探求しています。
これまでに住んできた国々の地理的、文化的相違や、故郷に残してきた親族たちへの思いが私にインピレーションを与えてくれます。」

ヒメナ・エゲルダは1964年にチリのサンティエゴで生まれ、ベネズエラで育ち、名古屋芸術大学で美術学修士奨学金生として1994年に来日しました。彼女は壁画プロジェクトと学校の焼成容量に合わないほどの大規模な陶芸を発展させ、大学は独創性の探求の時だったと記しています。地元の市長から公共の依頼で陶磁器像「Autana」（175センチ×60センチ）を作成し、大きな窯がまだ使われていた常滑にスタジオを移しました。ここで彼女は制作を続け、夫と家族とともに暮らしています。
